Rayquaza – Gold Star

There are certain Pokémon cards that need little introduction, especially among collectors who remember the EX era. Gold Star Rayquaza is undoubtedly one of them.

First released in EX Deoxys in 2005, Rayquaza Gold Star belongs to a generation of cards that has become increasingly appreciated over the years. Gold Stars were notoriously difficult to pull, with their distinctive artwork extending beyond the illustration borders and a small gold star beside each Pokémon's name.

Of the many Gold Stars released between 2004 and 2007, Rayquaza has remained one of the most sought-after. Its popularity has endured through generations of collectors, even as the hobby itself has changed considerably.

But for a card that is already difficult to find, condition adds another layer of rarity.

Gold Stars are well known for their susceptibility to whitening, edge wear, and silvering. Even copies that have been carefully preserved can exhibit imperfections from the printing and production process. As a result, examples in the highest grades are exceptionally scarce.

The Rayquaza featured here received a CGC Pristine 10, and holds a distinction that separates it from every other known copy: it is the only Gold Star Rayquaza recognized with a Pristine designation among the major grading companies.

In January 2024, this particular card found its way into the collection of Jesse Peng.

The Specimen

Jesse had been collecting Gold Stars long before he encountered this Rayquaza.

He already owned several PSA-graded examples and had spent years studying the vintage Pokémon market. Over time, he had developed a particular appreciation for Gold Stars, believing that their scarcity, especially in exceptional condition, had yet to be fully reflected in their market value.

When the opportunity to purchase this CGC Pristine 10 appeared, he understood how unusual it was.

Unlike many examples of Gold Star Rayquaza, the card showed little of the edge silvering and whitening that collectors so often encounter. It was not simply another high-grade copy. Its condition, together with its unique Pristine designation, made it a specimen Jesse was unlikely to encounter again.

In January 2024, he purchased it for $30,000 USD.

It was a considerable amount to spend on a single card, but Jesse was comfortable with the purchase. He believed in the long-term appeal of Gold Stars, and perhaps more importantly, he appreciated the rarity of the example he had acquired.

As the following years passed, interest in the Rayquaza continued to grow. Private offers arrived, some reaching well into six figures. Jesse considered them, but the card remained in his collection.

He had bought it because he wanted to own it, and for a long time, that was reason enough to keep it.

The Collector

Jesse's history with Pokémon began long before he could have imagined owning a card of this significance.

He was six years old when his family moved from China to the San Francisco Bay Area. Arriving in a country where he did not speak the language, he found comfort in something familiar to many children growing up in the late 1990s: Pokémon.

The animated series helped him learn English, while the trading cards gave him a way to make friends at school. His family moved frequently, but wherever they went, Pokémon remained something he could carry with him.

As the years passed, his interests gradually shifted. He pursued opportunities in technology and real estate, building businesses and establishing a career. Like many collectors who grew up with Pokémon, the hobby eventually took a back seat to the demands of adult life.

It would be years before he returned to it.

What began as a way to relax outside of work soon became something he shared with his wife, CJ. They collected together, explored the market, and gradually became more involved in the community.

During the pandemic, their interest grew beyond the cards themselves. Through collecting, they met people from different backgrounds, developed friendships, and became part of a community that had grown far beyond what Jesse remembered from childhood.

There is something fitting about the role Pokémon has played throughout his life. As a child, it helped him find his place in an unfamiliar country. Decades later, it brought new people and experiences into his life once again.

Among the many cards Jesse and CJ collected over the years, the Pristine Gold Star Rayquaza became one of their most notable acquisitions.

Why It Sold

By 2026, Jesse and CJ had built a substantial Pokémon collection. What had started as a shared interest had grown into an important part of their lives, and their collection had come to represent approximately a quarter of their total net worth.

With so much of their wealth concentrated in collectibles, they began discussing whether it made sense to sell some of their holdings and redirect capital toward other priorities, including their technology ventures.

The Rayquaza was one of the cards they considered.

Jesse had received significant private offers over the years, but selling a card of this caliber involved more than agreeing on a price. There were questions of trust, payment, and whether a private transaction could adequately reflect the value of such an unusual specimen.

Eventually, he decided that a public auction was the right approach.

The card was consigned to Fanatics Collect [Link to Auction], where collectors would have the opportunity to compete openly for the only known Pristine example.

After more than two years in Jesse's collection, the Rayquaza was finally being offered for sale.

    The Record-Breaking Sale
After more than two years of ownership, Jesse consigns the Rayquaza to Fanatics Collect. Bidding reaches approximately $480,000 before intensifying during extended bidding, eventually closing at $1,020,000 USD. The historic sale makes it the first English Pokémon card to surpass $1 million at public auction, setting a new benchmark for the hobby.

More Than the Sale

For Jesse, the auction marked the end of a memorable chapter in his collecting journey. A card he had purchased because he believed in its rarity and appreciated its condition had gone on to establish a new record for English Pokémon.

Yet its story is far from finished.

The Rayquaza has since passed into another collection, carrying with it more than twenty years of history and the experiences of those who have owned it.

Through Pedigree, we aim to preserve that history, documenting the ownership, milestones, and stories that belong to each individual collectible.

The $1.02 million sale will always be part of this Rayquaza's story. And as it continues its journey through the hobby, its history will remain preserved for the collectors who come after.
