Pokémon’s Holy Grail — The Pikachu Illustrator
The Genesis & Rarity
In the universe of trading card games, there are rare cards—and then there is “The Illustrator.” Its legendary status began in November 1997, when Japan’s CoroCoro Comic launched the “Pokémon Card Game Illustration Artist Contest.” Only 39 official copies were ever distributed to contest winners, cementing it as the absolute peak of TCG scarcity and the ultimate trophy for collectors worldwide.
The card features artwork of Pikachu joyfully holding a paintbrush and possesses a layout unique to this specific print run. It stands as the only card in history to bear the header text “ILLUSTRATOR” instead of “TRAINER,” accompanied by an exclusive double-star rarity icon found nowhere else in the TCG’s early era. It is, by every metric, Pokémon’s ultimate Holy Grail.
Its status as Pokémon’s ultimate Holy Grail was solidified at public auction February 12, 2026, when a PSA 10 specimen shattered all previous TCG records, selling for an astounding $16.49 million—the highest public recorded sale for any Pokémon card in history.

The Card’s Biography
Rarity alone isn’t what sets this specific TAG 8 copy apart—it is the legendary origin believed to sit at the start of its chain of custody. Before entering the official contest distribution chain, this copy is believed to trace back directly to Atsuko Nishida herself: the original illustrator of the card and the creator of Pikachu’s iconic visual design. The paintbrush Pikachu holds in the artwork isn’t just a charming motif; it is a direct reflection of the very hands believed to have held this card first.
Graded a TAG 8 NM–Mint with an impressive Technical Score of 805/1000, the specimen offers an incredible balance of historical weight and digital precision. Preserved through TAG’s photometric analysis, the slab serves as both a pristine technological archive and an emotional anchor for high-tier hobbyists. Holding a piece that potentially connected the character’s creator to modern collectors bridges the gap between commercial trading cards and fine art.
“This isn’t just a trophy card with a famous history—it’s a card that may have begun in the artist’s own hands.”
The Pedigree
The journey of this specimen represents one of the most storied chains of custody in modern card collecting. This copy is believed to belong directly to the person who illustrated the card herself, Atsuko Nishida. Decades later, on May 15, 2025, prominent collector Jesse Peng acquired the card as a CGC 8 certified copy online at The Pokecolor Auction Sale. Less than two weeks later, Jesse cracked and submitted the card to TAG Grading, where it underwent precise digital analysis, emerging with its landmark TAG 8 NM–Mint score and Chronology #7 designation.
The card’s public prestige reached new heights on February 7, 2026, when it was loaned by the Registry to go on public display as a featured centerpiece at the TCG Hall of Fame Museum Exhibition during Flagship Collecttopia 2026. Shortly after its public showing, the specimen surfaced on April 11, 2026, at Goldin Auctions, where it was acquired by renowned international investor Thiago Nigro.
